      <image:title>Happy Tails - Karina's Journey: Living and Loving with One Eye - Lucky Chi Dog Rescue would go into the shelter each day and see this cute, sweet tan chihuahua being overlooked. After coming back and seeing her still patiently waiting, we knew we had to foster her.</image:title>
      <image:caption>At the Ranch, Karina’s personality really started to shine. She loved to talk and play with the other dogs and finished each day with a cuddle. However, the Ranch was not the end for this gal. We knew she was destined for her own forever home…and her new home couldn’t be more perfect.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Happy Tails - Karina's Journey: Living and Loving with One Eye - Karina’s family has LONG been familiar with Lucky Chi Dog Rescue. In fact, they had adopted one of our original fosters, Lily Pea (pictured on the right), over a decade ago (before we were even officially Lucky Chi Dog Rescue). Once Lily Pea had passed, they adopted not one, but TWO of our Lucky Chi’s - Karina and Emma. But of course these two gals would need a brother to keep them in line, and so entered Peanut into the picture (a rescue from Animal Friends of the Valleys).</image:title>

      <image:title>Happy Tails - Karina's Journey: Living and Loving with One Eye - It was a Monday morning, and Karina’s parents woke up to a little cry coming from under the covers. They immediately noticed her eye was blue and foggy, and that she was struggling to keep it open.</image:title>

      <image:title>Happy Tails - Karina's Journey: Living and Loving with One Eye - Her parents were already familiar with Dr. Mike, from Canyon Lake Veterinary Hospital in Lake Elsinore. They knew with his experience with dogs and all of the Lucky Chi fosters, that he would know what to do. Eye drops and medications were prescribed, healing her other eye completely, but Karina’s right eye was no better. Dr. Mike and Karina’s family came to the sad conclusion that due to this onset Glaucoma, she would need her eye removed.</image:title>

      <image:title>Happy Tails - Karina's Journey: Living and Loving with One Eye - Karina’s surgery was a success as her right eye was removed and replaced with stitches. Although this change took some adjusting, Karina’s siblings huddled around her with support and snuggles as she recovered and weened off of her pain meds.</image:title>

      <image:title>Happy Tails - Little Paws, Big Lessons: - To paraphrase Forrest Gump, rescue and shelter dogs are like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get. Some dogs are “WYSIWYG”, What You See Is What You Get. Others not so much, since they can be inhibited or act out when they find themselves in a strange place around people they don’t know.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Dogs commonly display behaviors out of stress, anxiety, and frustration such as, barking, jumping, spinning, chewing, among others.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5eb63b7b6d69f33f3874edd3/a0fc809e-20a4-460c-8b4a-00a782fa8184/IMG_5693.jpeg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Happy Tails - Little Paws, Big Lessons: - When we work with shelter or rescue dogs, we first determine what an individual dog needs. Some just need some basic training like sit, stay, and learning self-control. Others, we need to take more time and let them acclimate to their new environment before we can work on training basic behaviors. With some, we need to build their confidence around people and sometimes the environment. Often confidence building starts with food stuffed dog toys. The right toys can help build confidence, reduce boredom, and reduce stress for dogs.</image:title>
      <image:caption>In addition to reducing stress, anxiety, and frustration, toys can be part of our plan to work through behaviors such as, barking, jumping, spinning, chewing, among others.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5eb63b7b6d69f33f3874edd3/45d1e5c5-0f14-4665-b326-547391f43c49/IMG_5741.jpeg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Happy Tails - Little Paws, Big Lessons: - Before we start to train dogs, it’s important that we understand that the foundation for all good training is based on establishing a good relationship built on the foundation of trust, respect, and desire. We want to be their best friend and playmate. We don’t need to be harsh with dogs nor do we need to show them who is boss. We just need to be in control and not fight for control. Meaning we set them up for success and do as much as possible to prevent them from practicing the wrong behaviors while we are working on teaching them new behaviors.</image:title>
      <image:caption>We need to learn how to communicate with our dogs and make training easy enough for our dogs to understand. Dog training should not look like a feeding disorder, nor a class on inflicting punishment. Our dogs should desire to be with us even when we don’t have food. Being pleasant with your dog does not make you a pushover; it only makes you enjoyable to be around. After all, you want to treat your dog like family, not a competitor.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5eb63b7b6d69f33f3874edd3/4faa5a13-da09-4578-9079-ec3214667d4b/IMG_0194.jpeg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Happy Tails - Little Paws, Big Lessons: - When I train dogs, I strive to make the training fun and easy enough for dogs to understand.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Part of training dogs is understanding that mandatory education/training can be a challenge. After all, learning is hard if it’s something you didn’t choose! So we need to focus on making training fun and rewarding. Dogs, like people, need a reason to do sometime (ROI). We all do things that are desirable or benefit us in some way. So does your dog! Because it’s almost impossible to teach a person or dog against their will.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Happy Tails - The Life and Times of Zowie! - Hi my name is Zowie which means LIFE. I am a female Chihuahua about 6 years old. My LIFE has been filled with many ups and some downs.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I first met my foster mom, Darlene, who started the Lucky Chi Dog Rescue non profit organization when I was only 6 months old. At that time, my foster mom did the responsible thing and had me spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped. I ended up getting placed with an adoptive family for about 5 1/2 years. This is where my LIFE turned not so good when I was dropped back off at the Animal Friends of the Valleys by the adoptive family. It was definitely confusing to be left. What did I do wrong? I was very scared because other doggies were in the same situation with me even though the animal shelter staff was very kind. Luckily, I was microchipped and the staff was able to get ahold of my previous foster mom, Darlene.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5eb63b7b6d69f33f3874edd3/46c525a6-54ad-4a79-bc63-04961f126bd6/Zowie+blog+2.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Happy Tails - The Life and Times of Zowie! - Darlene came immediately to bail me out. What a relief that I didn’t have to stay there too long. I knew she was a really cool, nice lady with a big heart. I was introduced to the other Lucky Chi Rescue doggies. All the doggies are on a daily schedule: fed twice a day, going to work with Darlene, walking daily on a leash, and being put to bed in our own crates nightly to sleep. I learned so many good habits while being with Darlene and the other chi dogs.</image:title>
      <image:caption>My prospective adoptive parents, Linda and Bob, lost their beloved 14 year old Chihuahua named Baby in September 2022. Linda started to look for a chi who was an older female chi that was quiet (not a barker), spunky, walks on a leash, crate and potty trained. Luckily, my foster mom, Darlene was able to let her know I checked all the boxes and a well trained Chihuahua. Linda and Darlene made the arrangements of doing a “try before adoption” weekend.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Happy Tails - The Life and Times of Zowie! - I found myself at a new unfamiliar home with strangers. I have to admit that I was a little timid because of my history of being passed around. I was introduced to their 14 year old dog, Molli, who isn’t too fond of other dogs and can be cranky because of her medical issues. I really didn’t warm up to Linda, Bob and definitely not to Molli the first day. I had an overnight transformation the next morning; I realized that I was cared for. The rest of the weekend was really fun for me. They took me for walks, fed me with yummy foods and put me into my own puppy condo (crate). My favorite snacks is semi-cooked carrots and doggie biscuits.</image:title>
      <image:caption>My foster mom, Darlene, wanted to get my teeth cleaned and two dew claws dangling on my back legs before I could be officially adopted. She scheduled me to get my bad teeth pulled and pearly whites polished. I even got a mani-pedi done by Dr. Mike at Canyon Lake Animal Hospital. I spent another week with Darlene and the rest of the gang at the ranch to recover. During this time, my potential adoptive parents kept checking on me and wanted to know when I could come back to their family.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Happy Tails - From Rags to Riches - Papi’s beginnings are unfortunately, not uncommon ones. Papi was found in unsafe conditions - living out his days in a dark, dirty apartment with his sister. Lucky Chi Dog Rescue got wind of Papi through another shelter, and it was then and there that we knew something had to be done.</image:title>
      <image:caption>One look at this guy and it was clear Papi needed help. We worked with coordinating between shelters and rescues to ensure Papi was cared for, neutered and up to date on vaccinations. All this guy needed was a little TLC! Fortunately, we were not the only ones who fell in love with this lovable chi. Papi was adopted by a loving family and now continues to live out his best life in his forever home. And what ever came of his sister you ask? They are reunited! Both of them living with the most loving family who continues to pay it forward and help be a voice for those animals that go unheard.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Happy Tails - Good things come in the shape of Tater Tots! - It was instantaneous that Miss Tater Tot stole our hearts - and we know her story will do the same to yours!</image:title>
      <image:caption>It is not difficult to see how Miss Tater gained her name. Her tiny, roundish stature resembling that of an actual tater tot quickly led us to the name we all know and love here on the Ranch. Miss Tater came to us small, frail and in need of a full dental. However, despite ALL of her health issues she was as sweet as can be! Anyone who has ever held Tater will tell you that she not only has a painted on smile, but also looks at you as if she’s listening to every word - and we believe she really is! After having her MUCH needed dental work - requiring all of her teeth to be removed - Tater was in the best of spirits. Her days quickly became filled with cuddles, sun bathing and familiarizing herself with the other residents. Seeing how seamlessly she took to life on the Lucky Chi Ranch, Tater became a permanent ranch resident in 2020 and has since been living out the past couple years happy and pain free. Although her old age has made her somewhat of a particular lady, she has never lost her smile and all-knowing look in her eyes.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Story - Frida</image:title>
      <image:caption>Originally, Heather found an old female Chihuahua sitting in the middle of a busy street in 90-degree heat with cars driving around her. Heather stopped and scooped her up. She bathed her and cut her nails and did the right thing by posting signs. She named her Frida. Ultimately, Frida was returned to her owners who sadly never cared for her as we would have and she went missing from her yard. We scoured the shelters and websites day and night We never saw sweet Frida again...and that shook us to the core.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Story - Noah</image:title>
      <image:caption>While scouring shelters we saw how bad things were. There we found Noah. He was in the medical section cages because he was so tiny and in bad shape. This tiny dog only 3 pounds struggled to stand up and wag his tail to greet us. We and the shelter staff were worried he would not make it through his stray hold at the shelter. Noah did survive and came home to know love comfort and food for four weeks. Sadly, Noah was lost suddenly during surgery to remove some infected teeth. His little broken body could not take any more. We were not prepared for this sudden loss and had thought if you a take a dog to a vet ...they get better. We then realized how fragile these lives were.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Story - Louis</image:title>
      <image:caption>This dignified older gentleman changed the lives of many dogs and humans. How could this sweet old man, found wandering in the streets have no one looking for him? 4 pounds skinny and neglected, his hip bone poking through his tattered skin, missing and rotted teeth. Louis still perked up and wanted to be held while wagging his little "rattlesnake" bony tail. We brought Louis home hoping we could at least have 3 weeks with him. We fed and cared for him, had him fixed, teeth pulled and cleaned up. He gained weight and then a little muscle and gave a great sigh of relief when he slept. We were blessed with 9 1/2 years which aged him at about 18 to 19 years. Louis's eyes showed the depth of his soul. He was wise and dignified and quickly became King Louis in our home. The other fosters that came respected and learned from his calm demeanor and his ability to forgive all that was thrown at him. How many more Louis are sadly waiting at the shelter with broken hearts ...and no one looking for them?</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Story - Our primary focus is subsidizing Spay and Neuter programs to prevent the needless suffering of unwanted dogs. We also support foster programs by funding medical and dental, along with pain meds for dogs in most need to alleviate suffering.</image:title>
      <image:caption>To date, we have fostered hundreds of dogs and spayed and neutered thousands of dogs here and in Mexico over the years. We continue to do spay and neuter events, support fostering to find loving homes, and subsidize medical expenses to relieve extreme suffering of shelter animals. We also promote humane education for the betterment of the lives of companion animals.</image:caption>
